Situated in what Lewis and Clark called the ‘Prickly Pear Valley,’ the Montana state capitol in Helena commands a dramatic view of its surroundings. Within the dome, four paintings depict key figures from Montana’s history: the Native American, the cowboy, the explorer/trapper and the prospector. Below, a statue of Jeannette Rankin commemorates the first woman elected to Congress and her devotion to peace even in the face of enormous opposition.
