The Capitol Art Collection

The State Capitol Complex also houses a major public, permanent collection of contemporary art by artists who live and work in the state. There are over 500 masterworks in the Capitol Art Collection, which is valued at 5.5 million dollars and continues to grow each year. The collection is overseen by the Capitol Art Foundation, which consists of a board of directors representing New Mexico's geographic regions. A diverse range of media, styles, and traditions are represented, including painting, sculpture, works on paper, mixed media, ceramic, collage, textiles, Spanish Colonial art, and hand crafted furniture. In addition to the permanent collection, the Capitol Art Foundation also manages the temporary, changing exhibitions in the Rotunda Gallery. The collection can be viewed during regular building hours.

Wonderful collection!

A $6 million art collection with additional temporary installments makes this capitol a must see if you're in Santa Fe. Many of the works were donated by the artists. Some of the pieces have extensive descriptions of the artist's process. The building, itself a beautiful architectural wonder, is centrally located.

We just showed up and had a personal guided tour. Legislature was in session, so the building was crowded. Art collection is fabulous, and worth the trip just for that.

The stamp for New Mexico is located at the information desk at the east entrance; NOTE --- during legislative session, the stamp is temporarily moved to the mailroom on the first floor.
