Poised on the banks of the Kanawha River, the capitols dome rises 293 feet above the grounds where numerous statues denote figures important to the states history. Be sure to look for Vesta, Ceres and Neptune as you tour the exterior and, inside, a hand-carved replica of the great seal and motto of West Virginia: Montani Semper Liberi: Mountaineers Are Always Free.

We visited the capitol in Charleston, West Virginia recently. We did a self tour and we were able to get into the building as it is WIDE OPEN - however, the House & Senate are usually closed during this time. We were disappointed but they were having a mock session with school kids and they said we could watch. It was very interesting and besides we were able to see inside. We also were able to get our book stamped at the Cultural Center.

Fun capitol to wander around in and don't miss the end of the hall where the large state quarter is displayed. Stand in the middle of the foyer and talk ...very cool echo.

the Applenuts

The mother of capitol domes. Best we have seen of 30 capitols so far. Inside is of dome those is quite plain compared to some others. Watch the cars around the capitol. The House and Senate members have special license plates.

My Dad and Grandfather were the stone masons for the stone setting for the capitol. My grandfather fell 150 ft from being hit on the head by a wheelbarrow of a worker above him. He survived! I lived in Charleston at the time, I was 3 yrs. old. I revisted the town in 1994 with my sister, who was born in Charleston in 1932. Lovely town, great capitol building with all the marble set by my Dad and Grandfather!
